Why "will it fit" matters more than "is it good"
Monitor arms are a specification-driven purchase. A five-star arm is worthless if your screen's mounting holes don't match, if your display is heavier than the gas spring can hold, or if your desk edge is too thick for the clamp. When we looked at what actually goes wrong for buyers on Reddit's r/Monitors and r/desksetup communities, the recurring theme was never "the arm was poor quality" — it was "I didn't measure first". One thread about an arm damaging a desk drew over 600 comments, and most of the advice inside boiled down to compatibility checks that should have happened before checkout.

Check 1: VESA mounting pattern
VESA is the standard grid of four threaded holes on the back of your monitor. Measure the horizontal and vertical distance between hole centres in millimetres.

Three practical complications to watch for:
- No visible holes. Some monitors (many Samsung and HP consumer models) hide VESA points behind a snap-off panel, and some budget screens have no VESA support at all. Check the manual before assuming.
- Recessed mounts. Certain curved monitors, including popular Samsung Odyssey models, set their VESA holes inside a recessed pocket. The arm's plate may not sit flush without the spacers supplied in the monitor's box. Keep those spacers.
- 75 vs 100 confusion. A 75x75 screen cannot bolt straight onto a 100x100-only plate. Most decent arms, including the Suptek monitor arm, ship with a dual-pattern plate that accepts both 75x75 and 100x100 — but always confirm before ordering.
Check 2: weight and size
Every arm publishes a supported weight range and screen size range. The Suptek arm is rated for 17–35 inch monitors up to 10kg. Two rules make this check reliable:
- Weigh the panel, not the box. The figure you need is the monitor's weight without its factory stand. Manufacturers list this in the spec sheet as "weight without stand". Shipping weight can be nearly double the panel weight.
- Respect both ends of the range. Gas spring arms need a minimum load to counterbalance properly. Mount a very light screen on a spring tensioned for a heavy one and it will drift upwards. Sizes below 17 inches or panels lighter than roughly 2kg may not hold position until you back the tension screw right off.
A note on ultrawides: a 34-inch ultrawide typically weighs 6–8kg without its stand, which sits inside a 10kg rating, but its width increases leverage on the arm's joints when fully extended. We cover the details in our 34-inch ultrawide setup guide.
Check 3: desk thickness and material
This is the check most buyers skip, and it is the one that produces the horror stories. Two questions:
Is the edge within the clamp's range? The Suptek clamp accepts desk edges from 10mm to 80mm thick. Measure the actual overhang where the clamp will sit — drawers, metal frames, cable trays and curved edges can all reduce usable clamping depth. If a rail or frame runs along the back edge, check there is enough flat surface both above and below.
Can the material take the pressure? A clamp concentrates force on a few square centimetres. As a rule of thumb from furniture specifications and community experience:

Hollow-core desks deserve special attention because they are everywhere in British homes — most famously several IKEA lines. Users on r/IKEA and r/desksetup have posted photos of dented and bowed desktops after clamping heavy dual-screen setups straight onto them. If clamping is marginal, remember the Suptek arm also includes a grommet mount: drill a 10mm+ hole (or use an existing cable grommet) and the bolt clamps through the desktop instead of around the edge, spreading load across washers on both faces. Grommet mounting works with desktops from 10mm to 80mm thick as well.
The five-minute checklist
- Find "weight without stand" in your monitor's spec sheet — must be 10kg or less (and ideally 2kg or more).
- Confirm screen size is 17–35 inches.
- Measure the VESA pattern — 75x75 or 100x100 fits directly; note any recess.
- Measure desk edge thickness — 10–80mm, with flat clearance above and below.
- Identify desk material — reinforce hollow-core or thin particleboard before clamping.
Pass all five and you can order with confidence.
